REPERTOIRE

Elementary Level Repertoire

Students perform three pieces by memory that demonstrate variety in meter, mood and
keyboard skills. Students with some experience should also demonstrate variety in rhythmic
notation and dynamic expression.

Late elementary students include one or two of the easiest works by composers of standard
concert music; however, the student's program need not demonstrate three contrasting musical
periods.

Before moving out of the Elementary Level, students must have successfully completed pieces
with the same musical and technical difficulties as the following:
Bach Haydn
from Notebook for Anna Magdalena from Sonata in F, Hob. XVI:9
Both Minuets in G Scherzo
Minuet in D minor
March in D
Mozart Burgmüller
Allegro in B-flat, K.3 Arabesque
Schumann Tchaikovsky
from Album for the Young Old French Song
Melody
The Merry Farmer
Kabalevsky Bartok
The Clown from For Children, Vol. 1
Variations in F on a Russian Theme Nos. 1 through 6

Intermediate and Advanced Level Repertoire

Students perform three pieces by memory, each taken from one of the following historic
th st musical periods: baroque, classical, romantic, impressionistic, 20 /21 century. All three pieces
may be chosen from composers of standard concert music or one of the pieces may be taken
from a "modern" composer of student teaching pieces whose work imitates one of the five
stylistic musical periods.

Students move into the Advanced Level when they are playing repertoire similar to or above
those works listed under Leading Tones - Early Advanced. Teachers use this level for advanced
students who are not yet old enough to be placed in Leading Tones and for high school students
who should not be adjudicated against the Leading Tones’ higher standard.

For repertoire suggestions, please refer to The Pianist’s Guide to Standard Teaching and
Performance Literature by Jane Magrath (Alfred Publishing Co.) or National Federation of Music
Club’s Festival Bulletin (phone 317-638-4003) as well as many other publications available.
